Introduction

combustion 4 is the Discreet stand-alone powerful desktop solution for creating stunning visual effects. It is a resolution-independent, vector paint, animation, editing, and 2D/3D compositing software application for multi-format work, from the web to video and HDTV to feature film.
In addition to its robust and cost-effective toolset, combustion offers the benefit of portability.
Whether you are a motion graphic designer, animator, visual effects artist, or a web designer, combustion empowers you with the tools you need to create outstanding visual effects for your web projects, video projects, or film projects.

Compositing 2D & 3D

Many common compositing scenarios do not require the full feature set of 3D space.

By creating a 2D composite or switching a 3D composite to 2D, you can speed up the rendering.

Color Correction
Color correction has many useful applications in combustion. The following are a few examples of reasons why you might use the Color Corrector:
Initial footage is unsatisfactory (it may have unwanted tones, or be too light or dark).
Brightening one or more selected areas of an image, such as a sky. You are trying to achieve a custom look, such as adding sepia-tone to a clip to make it look archival.
Trying to achieve a special effect involving color manipulation, such as changing the color of the talent's eyes.
Color-matching the source image to the background image for more realistic composites.

Text Animation
The flexibility and options of vector-based text in combustion not only let you animate titles and credits the traditional domain of character generators you can also create stunning textures.

Roto Scoping

Rotoscoping can describe many different actions in the compositing process, but, in combustion, it describes the act of painting an element into, or out of, a scene. For instance, if you use wires to support a subject during shooting, you can rotoscope the wires out of the scene during post-production, making the subject appear to be flying.

You can use the Reveal tool to add an element to a scene that was not present during shooting. You can also use a cloning tool to take one element and make it into many (such as making one tree into a forest).

Keying

Keying is the process of isolating a region of an image by isolating pixels of a particular color and making those pixels transparent. The main purpose of using the keyer tools in combustion is to generate mattes and remove color spill from a shot.

Particles

From explosions and laser blasts in outer space to smoke, fire, and water, computer graphic animation depends on particle systems to impress viewers. In combustion, you use the Particles operator to make such animations creatively come to life.

Camera

You use cameras to define and "record" your viewpoint for rendering. To look through the camera, set the viewport to Camera view. The camera behaves like any other object in a 3D composite.

Light

Point source lights project light onto objects as if from a lamp that projects in all directions. Point lights shade the surfaces of objects and the intensity decreases with distance. Use a point light to simulate a candle or light bulb.
The following example shows a layer in a composite with no lighting.

Paint

You can repeatedly clone part of an image wherever you like in the current frame.
Use the Clone tool to take a sample from one frame and then apply it to:

The current frame
Another frame (or sequence of frames) in the same clip
Any frame (or sequence of frames) in another clip.

Motion Morphing

Motion Morph to create a moving morph. The Motion Morph includes the
Morph from one moving sequence to another
Speed of the warp for each matching geometry can be set individually
Rate of dissolve can for each matching geometry can be set individually
Automatic alignment feature that can be used in conjunction with hand-alignment for a combination of user and automatic feature correspondence
